I personally love to use wire in my jewelry pieces. It is so versatile. I mostly use sterling silver and a bit of gold-filled, but will soon add some bright colors to my pieces with colored copper wire.
If somebody gave you a piece of wire, would you know what to do with it? I was thinking about that the other day and found out that there were lots of ways to use wire in jewelrymaking, other than using it in traditional metalsmithing. A lot of these techniques actually come from textile techniques. They have been adapted to metal wire with great success.
Here’s a list of what you can do with silver, gold or copper wire:
- wireworking
- wirewrapping
- wireweaving
- chainmaille
- crochet
- knitting
- French knitting
Each of these techniques give very different results and looks, so they each deserve to have their own post.
Stay tuned your more information on each of them!
