Care for Garnet

Care for Garnet

The garnet has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 in the MOHS scale of hardness. Garnet jewelry is great for daily use. The daily wear can cause the garnet to gather dirt or grime. Here's how to properly clean garnet jewelry.

1. Use a soft cloth. Polish the stone with the soft cloth to make it bright and shiny. Use a firm rubbing motion to remove dust, dirt, or grime.

2. Use a mild soap and water solution to clean the setting. Mix a half cup of water and 2 drops of soap in a bowl. Use the mixture to clean the garnet jewelry setting.

3. Raised setting. If the garnet stone is in a raised setting, use a toothbrush with soft bristles to gently clean the setting from inside out.

4. Decorative setting. If the garnet stone is in a decorative setting, scrub the area that is not directly touching the stone.

5. Rinse and dry. Rinse the garnet jewelry with a damp soft cloth. Remove all soap residue. You can pass the ring through running water once. Dry with soft cloth.

Points to Remember for Garnet Jewelry

  • Do not use toothpaste to clean garnet. Toothpaste is good for silver cleaning but not good for garnet. It can leave scratches on the stone as garnets are just a bit higher in hardness (6.5 - 7.5) compared to toothpaste (3-4).
  • Do not use salt or bleach to clean. Chloride, a component in salt and bleach can cause damage to silver and garnet.
  • Store garnet wrapped in a soft cloth and separate them from other harder stones like rubies, sapphires, or diamond.
  • Garnets are special. They have a rich history that makes them priceless to owners. Regardless of its value, the gemstone deserves TLC to maintain its color and shine.
